Teaching Philosophy

Teaching, for me, is not merely a profession; it's a heartfelt passion. The joy I experience when witnessing students thrive under my guidance has been a driving force throughout my decade-long career. I have been immensely fortunate to learn from masterful mentors and educators, and I see it as both a duty and a privilege to pay their wisdom forward. My teaching approach is rooted in the following principles:

  1. Inspiration & Creativity: I strive to ignite a flame of curiosity and creativity in my students. I firmly believe that when educators exude genuine passion, it's contagious. I live by the mantra, "It's not hard, it's just unfamiliar." This mindset, combined with a practice that's focused and intentional, empowers students to transform challenges into learning opportunities.

  2. Individualized Learning: Every student is unique, possessing varied tastes, learning styles, and paces of development. My role is to identify, appreciate, and cater to these differences. By equipping students with historical perspectives and connecting them to personal interests, from Louis Armstrong to John Coltrane, I aim to provide a rich tapestry of musical knowledge.

  3. Establishing Strong Foundations: Grounding students in the history and traditions of music is paramount. Drawing from my experiences in New Orleans, I've learned the importance of mastering foundational elements. It's akin to setting a solid base upon which future innovations can be built.

  4. Real-World Preparedness: As someone who ventured into the music industry, often learning through trial and error, I believe in equipping students with practical tools to navigate the professional realm. From effective practice habits to understanding industry etiquette, I strive to provide a well-rounded education that prepares students for diverse musical environments.

  5. Holistic Growth & Development: Beyond musical acumen, I see it as my responsibility to nurture professionalism, confidence, and a positive self-image in my students. High expectations are matched with unwavering belief in their potential, fostering an environment where growth is inevitable.

In my journey as an educator and performer, I've had the privilege to perform on global stages, collaborate with renowned musicians, and nurture the next generation of talent. My philosophy, deeply embedded in passion, understanding, and real-world experience, has been the compass guiding me. As I look towards the future, my commitment remains steadfast: to inspire, educate, and create a legacy of lifelong learners in the world of music.
